Is 4/6 in simplest form?

Both 4 and 6 divide by 2: 4 ÷ 2 = 2 and 6 ÷ 2 = 3. So 4/6 simplifies to 2/3, and the two are the same amount of pie.

Fractions equal to 4/6

Multiply the top and bottom by the same number and the amount doesn't change: 4 × 2 = 8 and 6 × 2 = 12, so 4/6 = 8/12. Times 3 gives 12/18. In the bakery, that's the same pie with every slice cut in two, then in three.

More fractions equal to 4/6: 2/3, 6/9, 8/12, 10/15, 12/18. The equivalent fractions lesson shows why this always works.

Is 4/6 bigger than one half?

4/6 is bigger than 1/2. One half of 6 parts is 3, and 4/6 has 4, which is more. Next to its neighbors: 3/6 < 4/6 < 5/6.

Common mix-ups with 4/6

It's not 6/4

Swapping the numbers changes everything. 4/6 is less than one whole; 6/4 is more than one whole. The bottom number always says how many equal parts make up the whole.

It's not 4/2

A pie with 4 filled and 2 empty is not 4/2. That compares the filled part to the empty part. The bottom number counts all 6 parts, filled or not.
