Is 4/8 in simplest form?

Both 4 and 8 divide by 4: 4 ÷ 4 = 1 and 8 ÷ 4 = 2. So 4/8 simplifies to 1/2, and the two are the same amount of pie.

Fractions equal to 4/8

Multiply the top and bottom by the same number and the amount doesn't change: 4 × 2 = 8 and 8 × 2 = 16, so 4/8 = 8/16. Times 3 gives 12/24. In the bakery, that's the same pie with every slice cut in two, then in three.

More fractions equal to 4/8: 1/2, 2/4, 3/6, 5/10, 6/12. The equivalent fractions lesson shows why this always works.

Is 4/8 bigger than one half?

4/8 is equal to 1/2. Half of 8 is 4, so 4/8 is exactly one half. Next to its neighbors: 3/8 < 4/8 < 5/8.

Halve, halve, halve. Three rounds of cutting every piece in two gives eight equal slices.

Common mix-ups with 4/8

It's not 8/4

Swapping the numbers changes everything. 4/8 is less than one whole; 8/4 is more than one whole. The bottom number always says how many equal parts make up the whole.

It's not 4/4

A pie with 4 filled and 4 empty is not 4/4. That compares the filled part to the empty part. The bottom number counts all 8 parts, filled or not.

Different numbers, same amount

4/8 and 1/2 look different, but the amount of pie is identical. Cutting the same pie into more slices doesn't change how much pie there is.
