Is 2/4 in simplest form?
Both 2 and 4 divide by 2: 2 ÷ 2 = 1 and 4 ÷ 2 = 2. So 2/4 simplifies to 1/2, and the two are the same amount of pie.
Fractions equal to 2/4
Multiply the top and bottom by the same number and the amount doesn't change: 2 × 2 = 4 and 4 × 2 = 8, so 2/4 = 4/8. Times 3 gives 6/12. In the bakery, that's the same pie with every slice cut in two, then in three.
More fractions equal to 2/4: 1/2, 3/6, 4/8, 5/10, 6/12. The equivalent fractions lesson shows why this always works.
Is 2/4 bigger than one half?
2/4 is equal to 1/2. Half of 4 is 2, so 2/4 is exactly one half. Next to its neighbors: 1/4 < 2/4 < 3/4.
2/4 in real life
Share the 20 into 4 equal groups: 20 ÷ 4 = 5 in each group. Take 2 groups: 5 × 2 = 10.
An hour has 60 minutes. 60 ÷ 4 = 15, and 15 × 2 = 30 minutes.
Cut in half, then cut across the first cut. Each half has been halved, so four equal slices.
Common mix-ups with 2/4
Swapping the numbers changes everything. 2/4 is less than one whole; 4/2 is more than one whole. The bottom number always says how many equal parts make up the whole.
A pie with 2 filled and 2 empty is not 2/2. That compares the filled part to the empty part. The bottom number counts all 4 parts, filled or not.
2/4 and 1/2 look different, but the amount of pie is identical. Cutting the same pie into more slices doesn't change how much pie there is.
