Is 3/4 in simplest form?

No number bigger than 1 divides both 3 and 4, so 3/4 can't be simplified. It's as simple as it gets.

Fractions equal to 3/4

Multiply the top and bottom by the same number and the amount doesn't change: 3 × 2 = 6 and 4 × 2 = 8, so 3/4 = 6/8. Times 3 gives 9/12. In the bakery, that's the same pie with every slice cut in two, then in three.

More fractions equal to 3/4: 6/8, 9/12, 12/16, 15/20, 18/24. The equivalent fractions lesson shows why this always works.

Is 3/4 bigger than one half?

3/4 is bigger than 1/2. One half of 4 parts is 2, and 3/4 has 3, which is more. Next to its neighbors: 2/4 < 3/4 < 4/4.

3/4 in real life

3/4 of 12 cake pops in a jar

Share the 12 into 4 equal groups: 12 ÷ 4 = 3 in each group. Take 3 groups: 3 × 3 = 9.

3/4 of an hour

An hour has 60 minutes. 60 ÷ 4 = 15, and 15 × 3 = 45 minutes.

Cutting quarters

Cut in half, then cut across the first cut. Each half has been halved, so four equal slices.

Common mix-ups with 3/4

It's not 4/3

Swapping the numbers changes everything. 3/4 is less than one whole; 4/3 is more than one whole. The bottom number always says how many equal parts make up the whole.

It's not 3/1

A pie with 3 filled and 1 empty is not 3/1. That compares the filled part to the empty part. The bottom number counts all 4 parts, filled or not.

Saying a definition doesn't make it stick. Finding 3/4 on a pie, a cake and a number line, over and over, does.
